Join the Friends of the York County History Center for this Scott Mingus guided bus tour of Confederate Major General Jubal A. Early's march to the Susquehanna River.

  • Itinerary

    8:15 AM – Gather at West Manchester Town Center, rear of Kohl’s

    8:30 AM - Bus leaves for Hanover Junction

    9:00 AM - Hanover Junction (2433 Seven Valleys Rd, Seven Valleys, PA). Discuss the importance of the Northern Central Railway to the Union war effort, the defense of Hanover Junction vs. the 35th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, and Lincoln's visit in November 1863 on his way to deliver the Gettysburg Address (and the controversial photographs)

    9:50 AM - Drive to Penn Common (US 30 to N. George Street, turn right. Take 30 to Philadelphia Street, turn right. Turn left on Beaver Street and then left on College Avenue. Park in front of Penn Common opposite William Penn High School). Discuss the U. S. Army General Hospital, the training camp of the 6th New York Cavalry (Colonel Thomas Devin), and Jubal Early's occupation of York

    11:00 AM - Drive to Wrightsville (College Avenue to S. George Street, turn right onto Market Street/PA Route 462. Take 462 nine miles to Wrightsville; turn left on Front Street. Park at the John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front Street, Wrightsville}

    *11:30 AM - Lunch at John Wright Restaurant

    12:30 PM - Discuss the defense of Wrightsville and the river crossing during the Gettysburg Campaign

    1:30 PM - Drive to Columbia (Front Street to Chestnut Street, turn right. Make a right back onto 462 and cross the bridge into Columbia. Left on 3rd Street. Right on Linden Avenue. Left on 5th Street under the overpass and immediately park at the cemetery on the right. Discuss the African-American company that defended the Wrightsville bridge crossing and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry at Fort Wagner

    2:15 PM - Depart Columbia

    2:45 PM - Return to parking lot at West Manchester Town Center, rear of Kohl’s and individually return home

    *John Wright Restaurant lunch choices:

    1. Nantucket Salad with mixed Greens, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, feta, balsamic viaigrette and sweet potato chips
    2. JW Burger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle served with choice of french fries or coleslaw
    3. John Wright Wrap with turkey, ham, bacon, smoked gouda, house made coleslaw and honey mustard.
